Five Scents of Seoul
It has been scientifically proven that a scent can remind you of a certain moment or location in your past. Then, what scent would bring Seoul to mind? Here are the five scents that will instantly take you to some place in Seoul.

1. Granhand’s Lumberjack and Whiskey Bar in Seoul
Lumberjack is a scent with an unexpected twist. In the men’s perfume market where options are limited, the Lumberjack scent was created to diversify the field and challenge the existing favorites to appeal to consumers with strong likes and dislikes. The fragrance of birch trees give you a wild, rugged, yet warm sensation. Blending woody and spicy notes, the scent is great for showing off one’s masculine and sensual side. To fully appreciate the Lumberjack, you need to wait a little. Despite the rather strong first impression, both men and women fall in love with this scent after they experience the gentle sillage. The Lumberjack leads us to a whiskey bar named ‘Cobbler’ from the 2017 film . Located in Seochon, Seoul, the bar sits in a traditional hanok building. The Korean-style architecture and whiskey do not seem relevant. However, they surprisingly create their own harmony, just like how varied fragrances bring out the ultimate masculinity in the Lumberjack.

Granhand’s Lumberjack scent
Granhand is a perfume brand launched in 2014 with an aim to form a culture of scents among Koreans so that they can enjoy fragrances in diverse ways, not just on special occasions but in everyday life, and use them as a tool to define their lifestyle. Granhand products are only sold through company-operated shops in order to uphold the value of ‘honesty’ the brand emphasizes. The first shop is located in Bukchon, Seoul. Its hanok building was commissioned by Granhand, and the fact that the products of French origin are on display in the Korean-style setting seems to hint at the stubborn principle of the brand. Scents by Granhand tend to be mostly mild and comforting. The company takes extra precaution in mixing fragrances to avoid heady or overpowering scents. Granhand presents great options for first-time perfume buyers or those who do not wear a perfume on a daily basis.

3. L’épilogue’s No. 6 and Museum in Seoul
L’épilogue suggests a perfume in a slightly different way. Each scent tells a unique story, leading the wearer to associate it with a certain situation. Instead of remembering a scent itself, people rely on a past circumstance or experience involving the scent to determine their likes and dislikes of a specific smell. Therefore, it is more effective to match a synesthetically-designed perfume with a wearer. Among L’épilogue products, ‘No. 6(NC-17)’ is receiving positive reviews from both men and women thanks to its title, ‘No one 17 and under admitted.’ The mix of spicy and musky notes started off with a question regarding the love and memory of people. “What would be the scent of someone who gets to be remembered more?” “What would it be like if the memory-evoking scent of No. 6 passes by the crowd moving leisurely among the artworks in the large, closed space of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(MMCA) in Seoul?” Maybe you could smell the scent of No. 6 which reminds you of a smooth skin, if you were to visit the MMCA which is frequented by diverse groups of people.

L’épilogue is a perfume brand launched in 2020 by lifestyle shop ‘Chapter 1,’ which has been working on a fragrance line since 2017 when it first released a diffuser and a room spray. Trying to understand something bigger than the visual realm, the perfumery focuses on human scents, going beyond the subconscious spatial odor interpretation. Just like how a space can become more complex with the addition of scent, L’épilogue dealt with fragrances as a means of solidifying an individual’s identity. It took two years of research and development for the brand to figure out how to prolong the persistence of its products. From ‘No. 1’ to ‘No. 6,’ L’épilogue perfumes have different storylines with keywords such as time, space, memory, situation, and people, through which you can find your true scent. The line will be expanded to include body care products by 2021.

4. Nonfiction’s In The Shower and Park in Seoul
Lifestyle and beauty brand Nonfiction recommends ‘In The Shower’ perfume launched in September. It took about a year in preparation to release the new scent. From its early development stage, Nonfiction staff welcomed the addition with enthusiasm. It’s a blend of spicy and woody fragrances using campari and patchouli as the main notes. Combining the feelings of damp trees, earth, and a forest, the perfume is suited for a season like now, where fall transitions into winter. There are many parks where you can be surrounded by trees and forests in Seoul. Seonyudo, in particular, is an ecological park formed over a closed water filtration plant on a small island in the Han River. Korea’s first environmentally-reclaimed ecological park, Seonyudo went through the very minimum renovation to be transformed into a space where the old plant facility and its history coexist with nature. The woody scent of ‘In The Shower’ diffuses through the air in the rugged, solitary park.

5. Monoroom’s Antic Sandalwood and Antique Furniture Street in Seoul
The two CEOs of ‘Monoroom,’ who were in love with vintage furniture, once roamed Itaewon’s Antique Furniture Street for over a month to find the perfect piece to put in their studio. Antique stores have a typical set of odors including a musty storage smell, woody scent, and the smell of an old oak barrel carrying an aged wine inside. Put your hand on one of the furniture on display and you can feel the smooth, worn-out surface. The shop owner goes on to give information about the piece, such as when it was made and where it came from. Listening to the story, you realize the passing of the times while also imagining the previous owners of the vintage article. That’s how the two CEOs came to create a scent that represents their emotions and memories from antique vendors. ‘Antic Sandalwood’ is a mix of spicy and sweet fragrances from spices and the sap of a tree. The perfume will instantly transport you to an antique shop in Itaewon.

Monoroom is a small-scale perfume maker working to create ‘a fragrance for only one space.’ With their work experience in graphic design, co-founders Yu Ho-seok and Lee Na-yeon are in charge of the whole process, from planning to manufacturing. As it’s a two-person operation, their preferences and ideas are mostly reflected in their brand. From the glass containers, to nozzles, lids, and paper, they set their own criteria of what’s beautiful and try to re-create it in their products. Monoroom features four scents in the form of candle, diffuser, and room spray. A small tealight candle can burn up to three hours and is perfect for a quick change of mood. Having worked as designers, their packaging boxes are unique and interesting. They personally tie the bows around the boxes whenever they sell an item. They go through a lot of trouble because they value the satisfaction they feel as brand co-founders. Thanks to their hard work, we have another fragrance brand within our reach.
