Finding Best Doughnuts of Your Life in Portland
Portland is no longer just about coffee and beers. Doughnuts should join the list now. The largest city in the state of Oregon is home to some of the most delicious doughnuts you’ve ever had.
Located in the Pacific Northwest, Portland is famous for its slogan, “Keep Portland Weird.” The city exudes inimitable vibes, full of stylish shops and retro buildings.
‘Made in Portland’ doughnuts have gained some traction of late. And they aren’t your average doughnuts. People form long queues to get their hands on colorful doughnuts, and they have become a new symbol of the city. You could spend a day just going on a doughnut tour in Portland. The uniqueness of it all can’t be easily defined in words, but this much is certain: these delicious doughnuts alone are absolutely worth the trip to Portland.

Voodoo Doughnut

Founded in 2003, this shop has the name that will grab your attention. There’s plenty to please the eyes, from its pink and violet sign, chaotic decor that gives off some occult-like vibes, colorful menu and even more colorful doughnuts. ‘Voodoo Doll’ and ‘Bacon Maple Bar,’ covered in maple syrup and topped with grilled bacon strips, are the two most famous doughnuts here. Don’t forget ‘Memphis Mafia,’ featuring chocolate, peanut butter, cinnamon and banana.

There’s very little that’s ordinary in this shop, be it a wacky blending of ingredients, sticks on top of doughnuts in an apparent homage to voodooism, and raspberry jam inside the dough that brings to mind blood.
Doughnuts here come in all shapes and forms, and each stands out like some sort of a character. Voodoo Doughnut offers over 50 types of doughnuts and 25 vegan doughnuts, and you can also place special orders. You can tell this is not your ordinary doughnut shop by their introduction. For doughnuts, they use eggs, milk and other dairy products, wheat, peanuts and other types of nuts, soy milk and, yes, voodoo magic.

Chocolate is made from scratch with 100 percent natural cocoa powder, and blueberries and basil help add a healthy edge to donuts.
Blue Donuts uses a classic brioche recipe from France. The dough, using sustainable bread flour, whole hormone-free milk and cage-free eggs, takes 18 hours to make. Blue Star also emphasizes the importance of cooperation and co-prosperity with the local community. Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai

Signs and logos at Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai are mostly hand-lettered by the shop’s co-owner and designer, Jamie, or in collaboration with local artists and creatives. This is a family business. The cloud walls inside were painted by Jamie, in memory of the high desert skies of her youth. The name Pip’s comes from a character in the novel by Charles Dickens. The shop is devoted to the original taste of doughnuts, though it gives off the air of a cool and detached friend.

The flavors include something as straightforward as Cinnamon Sugar and Raw Honey & Sea Salt, and something as sweet and delicious as Nutella. Pip’s brings you different menus for different seasons. And instead of pairing doughnuts with coffee, Pip’s serves ‘Chai’ on the side. The five types of blended tea can be found alongside ‘a secret doughnut menu’ that changes based on new seasonal flavors. It just piques your curiosity.
