[INSIDER GUIDE] The Colorful Busan Described by Edit Founder Oh Sunhee
Oh Sunhee is the founder of fashion consulting studio Edit and creative director of goods brand By Edit. She is skilled at planning and editing things by her own standards. She says the most important purpose of editing is “providing a familiar subject with a fresh perspective and helping people realize it.” We’ve asked her to edit Busan, the city she’s especially fond of.
“I’m fascinated with the brief history created by the war, and the food that originated in that brief time period and became popular, such as ‘gukbap(rice soup)’ and ‘milmyeon(wheat noodles),’ and the fact that people in Busan like glamorous things and do not hesitate to show off what they have. The city pleases me whenever I visit, with buildings painted in colors that I like.”

Gamcheon Culture Village
The most “Busanesque” scene?
The view of Samik Beach Town painted in the three primary colors, and whenever I see that from inside a cab while crossing Gwangandaegyo Bridge, I think, “That’s Busan.” Samik Beach Town is an apartment complex built in 1980. The colorful view of Gamcheon Culture Village is also a unique, lovely Busan feature. How can a city possess such colors and vivacity? It always amazes me.

Busan Modern History Museum
Favorite gallery?
The Busan Modern History Museum and the Gupo Noodle Experience Hall where Busan’s famous ‘Gupo’ noodles are presented. Gupo Noodle packages are my favorite. Even before the trend of “newtro” began, Gupo Noodle has kept its charms and the vibe that “We do things the way we want.”

Samik Beach Town
A place that inspires you?
My favorite building is Namcheon-dong Samik Beach Town apartments. The Samik Beach Town Line by By Edit began from a simple idea of creating bags that look like those apartment buildings. Old yet colorful, I had a desire to move my office there. Also, I have a vivid memory of watching an Eric Rohmer film at Cinematheque Busan that used to be near the Busan Yachting Center.

Oh Sunhee
About Insider: Oh Sunhee, In Love with Bold, Glamorous Busan
Busan is a coastal city situated in the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula. During the Korean War, Busan served as a home for many refugees and a provisional capital. With a rapid growth of Korean economy, Busan became Korea’s No. 1 trade port and one of the top port cities among those on the Pacific. Having beautiful beaches surrounding the city, Busan is also a major tourist destination. A city of gourmands represented by Jagalchi Market, a city of movies hosting Busan International Film Festival, and a city of baseball resided by passionate baseball fans are just a few nicknames Busan has.
We asked Edit CEO Oh Sunhee about her evaluation of Busan. “To compare it to a fashion brand, Busan is always like Chanel. Its camellia flowers add to the sentiment. It’s bold and glamorous.” Coincidentally, Busan and Chanel both are represented by camellia. Still, it won’t be so obvious to other people that the two share the respect for the same flower.
Oh launched her fashion consulting studio Edit, after building a career as a fashion director at Harper’s Bazaar Korea. Through Edit’s goods brand By Edit, she promoted her company to consumers. By Edit features limited-edition bags and t-shirts, which frequently sell out. She says the most important purpose of editing is “providing a familiar subject with a fresh perspective and helping people realize it.” Her goal is to establish a fashion and culture platform under Edit, covering areas of consulting, goods(bags, clothing, cups, etc.), publication, and videos.
Having dreamed of speaking of her own origin and its splendor, instead of praising some other city in a foreign country, she currently focuses on the color of Busan and the city itself. Although she was born and raised in Seoul, she has an unconditional love for Busan. Recently, she published a city guide book titled “Edit Busan” and released a “Busan Edition” bag designed with the colors she found in Busan. The city pleases me whenever I visit, with buildings painted in colors that I like. I would like to borrow the colorful images and apply them to my design.” What colors and images would she have collected in Busan? You can find out about her reinterpretation of Samik Beach Town, Gamcheon Culture Village, and Haeundae, at the websites listed below.
