Sustainable ESG Management by LOTTE HOTEL
In the 21st century, responding to global climate change and ensuring the common good in society have become core tasks of the government as well as businesses. The proclamation of ESG management by LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS is also geared toward protecting the environment and promoting sustainable growth for both the corporate world and society.
Our planet confronts a mounting pile of homework in this century. We need to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emission to zero in response to global warming, and come up with solutions to inequalities in many countries. Leaders of nations with a far-reaching influence and impactful voice regularly get together for a global conference devoted to achieving carbon neutrality and sustainable development. However, it is not as easy as it sounds.
From May 30 to 31, ‘2021 P4G Seoul Summit’ was held in the Korean capital. P4G stands for Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030. As the name suggests, it is a global consultative body pursuing joint responses and alliances by the international community on the issues of climate change and carbon neutrality. It has encouraged businesses home and abroad to promptly prepare for and proceed with the ESG management.

LOTTE HOTEL and Earth-Friendly Management Strategies
ESG stands for environment, social, and governance. Global companies have recently been working on setting individual plans that encompass these three elements, which are considered crucial for a long-term, sustainable growth of business.
LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS, the largest Korean hotel chain, has also joined in the ESG management by declaring the launch of its campaign in 2021. Despite the uncertainties in the hotel industry brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the management concluded that it is a natural course of action to make necessary changes that can promote the business in a sustainable manner and make social contributions.
As the first step, LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS organized a company-wide ESG committee. It will work to increase eco-friendly facilities and expand contributions to the local community through win-win strategies involving green offices, small businesses, and social ventures. In addition, all information regarding the ESG management will be made public to ensure transparency, and the ESG action guide for hotel employees is to be implemented.
LOTTE HOTEL & RESORTS CEO Kim Hyun-sik recently declared a new vision for the ESG management under the slogan “GREEN STAY without a single use.” An emphasis will be placed on reducing carbon footprint(the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted in association with a product from its production through consumption) by cutting down on the use of disposable items.

Introducing Multi-Use Bulk Dispensers
Action is the most important aspect with these initiatives, and LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS has some concrete, practical ideas. For example, in June 2021, L7 Hotels and LOTTE City Hotels replaced the disposable containers designed for hotel amenities with newly-designed, multi-use bulk dispensers, lowering the amount of plastic waste.
The truth is, in the hotel industry, it is not an easy decision to replace bathroom amenities for guests with large products. Traditionally, hotel amenities have been associated with the hotel service and signature style. Nevertheless, LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS took the bold, first step to participate in minimizing the carbon footprint.
The newly-introduced dispenser uses a non-refillable container that cannot be opened so as to completely block foreign substances from getting in. At the same time, by establishing a stricter housekeeping process, concerns about hygiene in sharing large dispensers, which have been repeatedly raised, can be resolved.

In addition to the change to the amenities, there is another noticeable change in terms of improving energy efficiency. LOTTE HOTEL WORLD, whose renovation is slated to end by the first half of 2022, introduced free cooling equipment at the end of the first phase, June 1. The free cooling system can save up to 100,000Kwh in electricity annually by repurposing the cooling water in the pipes for air-conditioning. Now other LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS franchises can follow suit, introducing the free cooling system, directly and indirectly reducing carbon emission.
Customers will remember LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS for its active participation in saving our Earth which set an example of how to protect the environment and still sustain growth through the reduction of greenhouse gases, rather than for the impeccable services and products offered by the hotel.
